Leaving the city is like transplanting old roots to a new bed, a fresh plot of nutrient-rich soil with enough room to finally bloom. The greenery is vibrant, lush, out here in the burbs. Not quite rural, but there are farms with sunflower stalks and maypoles, wood barns that look like Pinterest photos, and cherry blossoms in bloom. Everything is spaced out, and there are dirt and gravel roads tucked into thick woods, verdant and full of life.

Maybe moving out of the city wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Thoughts of using the money from being Cole’s fake boyfriend to start a new nursery fill my head.

The sun bakes into my cells, and I absorb its rays. Cole lets me keep the windows down so I can stick my face out and feel the warm wind whip past. I make a tongue-in-cheek joke about wagging my tongue like a good boy, hoping he’d remember when I made that bougie-ass older couple uncomfortable, but either he didn’t hear or find it funny because he doesn’t react.

“You okay?” I ask, sticking my head back inside. My hair is frizzy, so I pat it down with my hand.

“Huh?” He grips the wheel of the rental, a white Mercedes-Benz with a light tan leather interior, white-knuckled, at ten and two. “No, I’m good.”

“You sure about that, sparky?”

He taps his fingers restlessly. “Nervous about seeing my family.” He adjusts the rearview mirror, and I follow his line of sight to the gray Mercedes Zipcar rental behind him. Jason is behind the wheel. I haven’t had the chance to talk to Cole yet. Truth be told, I have no idea how to broach the subject, so I’m biding my time, waiting for a good moment.

“When was the last time you saw them?”

“My sister, a couple days ago. Her fiancé, Mikey, a year ago when they came to visit LA. He proposed to her on a secluded beach in Malibu. I helped him organize it.”

“That’s so romantic!” My heart melts.

“Mikey’s one of those model straight ally dudebros. Very ‘I love my gay brother-in-law,’ wears glitter at Pride, and isn’t uncomfortable when a guy hits on him. I actually think he likes it. He went back to school—the Culinary Institute, much to Father’s chagrin. He’d probably prefer she marry within her class.”

I humph and squirm thinking about the clothes I wore the night I met him, wondering what he’d think of my tiny studio with Kit or the small apartment I grew up in on the outskirts of New Orleans.

He glances quickly to me. “Yeah, so you’d think he’d be one of those romantic chef boyfriends. But he’s not exactly one for l’amour. He told me he wanted to propose on a Ferris wheel with a damn flash mob.”

“How 2013 of him.”

“Very that. I told him I’d take care of it. I had it arranged where the beach was littered with rose petals and those battery-operated candles that look like real flames. There
